Rick Santorum's Bizarre Revisionist View of the French Revolution
In the wake of Rick Santorum's recent three-peat, he's drawing more scrutiny, and the results are predictably awesome.
Check out this completely ahistorical take on the French Revolution.
SANTORUM: They are taking faith and crushing it. Why? Why? When you marginalize faith in America, when you remove the pillar of God-given rights, then what’s left is the French Revolution. What’s left is the government that gives you right, what’s left are no unalienable rights, what’s left is a government that will tell you who you are, what you’ll do and when you’ll do it. What’s left in France became the guillotine. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re a long way from that, but if we do and follow the path of President Obama and his overt hostility to faith in America, then we are headed down that road.
If a junior high student had written this gibberish in an essay on the French Revolution, he'd deserve an F.
Santorum has this exactly backwards, of course. It was under the French absolute monarchy and the Ancien Régime that one had no "unalienable rights" and had a government that could tell you "what you'll do and when you'll do it."
And the Revolutionaries, inspired by Enlightenment figures like Rousseau and the American Revolution, wrote and signed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which
...defines a single set of individual and collective rights for all men. Influenced by the doctrine of natural rights, these rights are held to be universal and valid in all times and places.
The first of these include:
- Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good.
- The aim of all political association is the preservation of the natural and imprescriptible rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.
- The principle of all sovereignty resides essentially in the nation. No body nor individual may exercise any authority which does not proceed directly from the nation.
- Liberty consists in the freedom to do everything which injures no one else; hence the exercise of the natural rights of each man has no limits except those which assure to the other members of the society the enjoyment of the same rights. These limits can only be determined by law.
Obviously, none of these rights existed under King Louis, and unfortunately for Santorum, the Catholic Church stood in direct opposition to the French Revolution and in support of the Ancien Régime.
Of course, this is all an aside to the fact that the notion President Robespierre Obama is about to unleash a Reign of Terror and start beheading clergy is well beyond insane.

someone who talks about less goverment ol ass juice sure wants alot of control.
So, you actually derived some time of cognitive message from these lunatic rantings?
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
The fundies that flock to him will let most of it go over their heads and take the message that Obama is ready to set up 'guillotine panels' for the faithful.(or something like that)
The statements of santorum will not be challenged in any of the media that his followers use.

On the contrary. They value it so much that they seek to appropriate it. It's no coincidence that among those reactionaries who currently control the GOP are many who first cut their political teeth winning school board elections.

I don't think this comment has anything to do with the French Revolution. I think it's a big dog whistle to the Fundamentalists and taken from the Hal Lindsey book series on the Rapture. The anti-Christ used the guillotine on Christians who wouldn't renounce their faith. Therefore Obama is the anti-Christ. QED.

Pretty cool that you noticed that, also... entirely too many liberal posters are woefully ignorant about the other side... but one of the many good things about being a liberal is that we believe that ignorance can be cured by education, whereas stupidity goes clean to the bone.

Horribly written... my comment was made more about a general tendency to get details wrong about religious things the rightwingers take very seriously... and a general lack of education about those very things.
One doesn't have to be a believer in any faith to get a little more educated, and the nuances really do matter...
For instance, Santorum's been accused of being a fundamentalist, which he is not, as that is a term coined by hardcore Protestants in the late-19th century regarding what they viewed as the "5 fundamentals of the gospel." Santorum is a Catholic of a very old-school variety... extremely conservative, but decidedly not Protestant.
It's rather the same thing that the right gets correctly criticized for with their "sharia law" bugaboos without ever knowing just what that term refers to...
and we on the left should know better.

Which head, big or little, are we going to behead?
With priests I suggest the little one.
It was the clergy and the rich nobility that brought on the French Revolution. Their greed and collusion, restricting the average French citizen to having no say but being the only ones who pay taxes - the injustice, lack of fairness, that some would live lavishly while others starved, brought on the French Revolution. A king's inability to meet his people's needs brought on the French Revolution.
So what is Rick trying to say here, that Obama is King Louie?
sanitorum again hitting the 'god-given rights' drum?

I really have to wonder what the hell these idiots think they mean by this...
There are no "given" rights, either by someone's interpretation of the Absolute, or by government...
Government merely recognizes that such rights exist, and codifies the concepts in law to ensure that no one attempts to try to squelch such rights.

And, FWIW, the frothy one and his supporters are crowing about the 3 "victories" when the actual winner from the R side is NOTA... None Of The Above, as most folks stayed home...

There are no existing rights that are not conferred by something outside oneself, either by (way back when) whatever god is worshiped, or by (these days) the society that one lives in. If I'm in France, I have the right to go topless on the beach. If I'm in America, I don't. I can yell about it all I like, but the fact is, that right is conferred on me by the French government but not by the American. I do not "have" that right in the universal sense, and neither do I have any of the other rights we take for granted, unless the rest of the society I live in agrees that I have it. Without that approval, the right remains just an abstract concept. Which is very nice but doesn't have any impact on the real world at all.
Here's an example: Stan wants the right to have babies.

Bottom line, it scares the hell out of me that this person has gotten this far in the campaign for President of our country. Just the fact that anyone in our country would consider him presidential material is the stuff of nightmares. I would fear living next door to him let alone having him anywhere near the bomb button.
The sad part is, the people he is appealing to have no more of a grasp on history than he does.....and his campaign knows that.

He's a super religious Christian, with the green sweater and moustache. His two kids, Rod and Todd, are very sheltered and naive. Other kids pick on them. Flanders himself is depicted as having a well-muscled physique. He often calls up Reverend Lovejoy in the middle of the night worried about sin. Homer Simpson torments Flanders, steals from him, mocks him, bullies him, etc. But Flanders is still honest and decent. He is the embodiment of religious jokes on any given episode.
I have more respect for him than I do the fake Christian right. At least Flanders was written to always be a good person. That's something Republicans have totally lost focus on. Their view of religion is that it is a rule book for which they can refer to when they want to condemn other people, but one that they don't have to follow themselves.
until he has a white wine spritzer... spritzer... spritzer... spritzzzzz
Really, not much gets to him; he happily rolls on because his heart is good. He rarely preaches to others but keeps his religious beliefs to himself (OK, his family). Indeed, his character is not so much one of Christians to be mocked as it is of ones idealized.

in that rights are said to be natural, and not "ordained by god", but go down the page and you will find "This meant that at the time of the Declaration only white, male, property owners held these rights." pretty much the same conditions that obtained here after the war of independence.
here's about half the problem, rights are not from god, rights are a social arrangement, we have no "natural" rights, there is nothing "inherent and unalienable" about a damn thing, sad but true ladies and gentlemen, i hate to break it to you.
the sooner all parties involved realize this simple truth, that all of our laws are nothing less than the imposition of the (supposedly) popular will thru the coercive power of the state? the sooner we may figure things out.
in our country religious figures of all stripes are fighting a rearguard action to maintain the grip of outdated philosophies over the population, in other countries religious law is a fact of life; then there are a few loonies out on the fringe who wonder when we will actually develop a coherent humanist philosophy upon which to base our social arrangements, this country does not seem to be ready for that day.
Here we go again...I must quote the master.
"Here’s one more item for you, the last in our civics book: Rights. Why everyone in this country is always running around yammering about their fucking rights. I have a right, you have no right, we have a right, they don’t have a right… Folks, I hate to spoil your fun but—there’s no such thing as rights, okay? They’re imaginary. We made them up! Like the Boogie Man… the Three Little Pigs, Pinocchio, Mother Goose, shit like that. Rights are an idea, they’re just imaginary, they are a cute idea, cute… but that’s all, cute, and fictional. But if you think you do have rights, let me ask you this, where do they come from? People say, well, they come from God, they’re God-given rights… Aw fuck, here we go again… here we go again. The God excuse. The last refuge of a man with no answers and no argument, it came from God. Anything we can’t describe, must have come from God...Now, if you think you do have rights, one last assignment for you. Next time you’re at the computer, get on the Internet, go to Wikipedia. When you get to Wikipedia, in the search field for Wikipedia, I want you to type in “Japanese Americans 1942,” and you’ll find out all about your precious fucking rights, okay? "

Reads like an over-simplification based on the least-well thought-out bits of Enlightenment philosophy regarding individual rights.
Og, his wife Mook and neighbor Nog are members of a stone-age tribe living in the Amazon rainforest. Over the eons, the tribe has come to find that if a neighbor sleeps with the wife of his neighbor bitter fights ensue, and the tribe shrinks to almost nothing, making it terribly hard for the remaining people to protect themselves, to survive in their environment. The tribe has developed a tradition- something law-like, but not codified- which is that if a man sleeps with the wife of another, the man is cast out of the tribe. He his left to fend for himself in the wild. So Nog, in defiance of the tradtion, sleeps with Mook, and is cast out and dies. The tribe continues on.
So, in this case, is the tradition- the law- a bad thing?

What gets me is these are the same people who go on and on about Sharia law and then they oppose the Presidents plan to cover all women when it comes to contraception.
